Vince was born the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and since we have celebrated his birthday on that weekend. The pools are open and I consider it the official start of Summer, but it also means that some people will usher in Summer with fireworks. I’ve never been much of a fan of fireworks, unless they’re far away, because I find them terrifyingly loud so can only imagine what it feels like to be Vince.

Each year, I have tried to anticipate and reduce his anxiety. The days leading up to and after 4th of July, I close the windows, draw the shades, turn on a podcast along with classical music, and wrap him in a blanket and wedge him between my body and another pillow. This method works fine when we are home, but one time we were driving home from my parents’ house and I did not expect to encounter fireworks and another time we stayed too late at a friend’s barbecue.

Vet Visits

On a previous to our vet’s office visit, they clipped his nails and he did not like it because he only wants me to clip his nails, so now going there is an event he would prefer we avoid. Every birthday, the vet sends a card and invites pets to come in and get a toy, I was going to skip it but having Composure, it was a great reason to give Vince one supplement and visit. He exhibited less panting, which is one of the first ways he shows anxiety, and entered the building instead of trying to stay outside.

Zest for Life

Vince has a robust zest for life, which I love! The way he enters dog park after I take him off leash is to run to furthest part of the park and then weave back to taking inventory of every pup and person.

But this same zest is hard for him to handle when we go to dog events where all dogs remain on leash. He is not free to roam and greet, gets anxious, and has a hard time focusing on me and commands. He is akin to the kid who sees cotton candy at an amusement park and is completely distracted from listening to his parents. I’m hoping the Composure can help him remain best self in these situations.
